A Voice in the Desert in Mozambique

A Voice in the Desert in Mozambique (Avodemo) is one of our Mozambican partner organizations. Avodemo is a registered charity headquartered in Quelimane, in Zambezia province of Mozambique. Its purpose is reducing poverty and helping create a sustainable life for the most vulnerable of local people. Avodemo is a shortened form of the Portuguese ‘Ã Voz No Deserto de Moçambique’ – ‘A Voice in the Desert in Mozambique’.

What Avodemo does:

  • supply emergency food aid, for people in need such as street children and people with HIV-AIDS
  • supply mosquito nets to protect against malaria, for people in mosquito-prone lowland areas who can’t afford them
  • during the current pandemic, supply masks to protect against Covid-19; many people in Quelimane’s poorer neighbourhoods cannot afford even a mask
  • supply clean water and soap and instructions in anti-covid hygiene
  • Avodemo has a particular ongoing ministry to prisoners, teaching literacy in prisons and helping prisoners adapt after their release
  • Avodemo also ministers to elderly widows. Sometimes a widow is abandoned and/or persecuted by her husband’s family after his death. Avodemo provides protection and shelter.
